To the south

I have decided to do my final project on landscape. To start off, I went to the south of England to look at some landscape. I went to Cuckmere Haven, part of the South Downs, situated near the town of Eastbourne. The weather was mild and sunny. The cliffs at Cuckmere were beautiful, and I had lunch on top of the cliff sitting on the grass looking across the ocean - I wish I was still there!

Negative space project, final images and snow!

Final images I did for my last project. This is the statement:

"This project explores the negative space of objects, specifically trees. It is an insight into the visual identity of a tree seen through the space it creates. Using photographs of a tree seen from different angles as reference images, these have subsequently been transferred onto silkscreens, allowing only the negative space to be printed. By printing the negative space using colours from a tree-colour-palette, I am treating space as physical mass and showing the strong relationship between the two: by focusing on the negative space, the final outcome is ultimately a focus on the tree, and represents an alternative way of seeing our surroundings"

I made two versions, one combining many screenprinted pieces of acetate, and another where all the screens were printed onto paper. I made them into info-graphics to allow a better understanding.

On another note, it snowed a lot last night and now everything is white, I love snow! We just had hot chocolate and marshmallows, and I am spending the afternoon on the couch under the duvet reading Christopher Neve's amazing book "Unquiet Landscape"! Here is an excerpt I fell in love with:

"Landscape painting catches at those unexpected ideas and emotions that come, and so easily go, on days of no particular importance. It shows life not as a development but as a condition. How often have you sworn to yourself that this is the most beautiful day you have ever seen, on no particular day, on a day like, and yet entirely unlike, any other?"

David Hockney: A bigger picture

I went to see the enormous David Hockney exhibition at the Royal Academy of Art. It was beautiful! Since I am a member of the RA, I was able to see the show before it officially opens, but it was still very busy. I have a fear that, when it opens, it will be just as chaotic as when they had their Van Gogh exhibition two years ago: I remember having to queue for two hours to get tickets, and technically queue behind other spectators to see each individual canvas!

I took a photograph, the quality is not that good, but you get the idea of the scale of his paintings:

The exhibition, sectioned up into approximately 12 rooms, dealt with different themes but the subject of nature was seen throughout.

They were mostly centred around the landscapes of East Yorkshire but exceptions to this was Yosemite paintings, Grand Canyon paintings, photo collages and a couple of pieces from his student time and from his life in Los Angeles (don't expect to see any swimming pools though).

His famous Grand Canyon painting 'A Closer Grand Canyon' painted in 1998, is permanently shown at the Louisiana Museum of Modern art in Denmark, and I had seen it there before several times:

When I saw it again here in London, next to all the other big Hockney paintings, it seemed much smaller than when I had originally seen it, but it was still spectacular. I love the colours he uses, they really grab your attention, and even though I brought my sketchbook, I had no chance to do any drawing because I had looked around for so long, that by the time I had finished, they closed the exhibition!

I admire his patience, as he would paint the same view eight times to get the different seasons.

His ipad paintings and a video installation showing the original locations used for his pictures is also on show.

Go see it if you can, it is one of the best exhibitions around!

I have independent study week, where I need to decide what to do for my final major project. It is a bit daunting to think that this is the final project, but exciting at the same time. I would like to continue working with negative spaces, but in a more general way, focusing less on trees.

Here are some cut-outs of negative space that I worked on during the christmas holidays. I made them by cutting into card. I found real joy in working with a knife and cutting out sections - there is a sense of real connection with the material, and a sort of labour satisfaction at the end of the day when one can pick up the paper and look through the gaps.

They are all A3 except for the first image, which is a small experiment from my sketchbook.

Relaxing in the north

Happy New Year! A bit late, but I have completely forgotten to update the blog due to spending time with my family! It was nice being home, and the Swedish sun was ever so pretty yesterday!

Whilst being in the north I also took the opportunity to go to some art exhibitions. I went to Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, Denmark, where Paul Klee, COBRA and Ai Weiwei were on display. And the Moderna Museet in Malmö, Sweden, had an exhibition entitled 'Changing Scenes' which exhibited Henri Matisse, Alexander Calder, Ferdinand Leger, Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso amongst others, and it looked at outer factors influencing the artists: dance and Africa for example.

I am back in London now, starting the last part of my degree!

I did some images for the Poster for Tomorrow project. My posters were not selected, but I share them with you anyways, as I enjoyed making them.
The theme was 'Right to Education' and on the website you can see the beautiful 10 posters that got selected, and at some point the remaining 90 will be available to view.

Mexican drug war book

I forgot to show you how my Mexican Drug War project turned out. I made it last year around this time.

I made a postcard book that gives a voice to the people being affected by the situation. Six people from Mexico wrote down their thoughts on the matter, and these have then been translated into english.
If you don't know, Mexico is in a hectic state, with drug cartels fighting each other, killing thousands of people. According to CNN, since 2006 more than 45 000 people have died from the war.

If you look at my third picture, the number of deaths was 28 000 when I made the book - only a year from then the number has risen by about 17 000.

Hard times.

Negative space

I am really busy working on my project and on another one. Right now I am looking at the negative space in between leaves. I have been cutting out the spaces and making 'prints' by drawing through to another piece of paper. The results are quite abstract:

I am so happy! This is my first publications!

I enjoyed working on this project so much, it opened up a new way of working for me. I have always been interested in detail and nature but this has helped me evolve as an artist and look at things in a new way.

I have returned from Finland!
Just a quick post to show this beautiful painting I got from my dad for my birthday:

It is a Tingatinga painting that he brought back for me from Tanzania!

I love the imagery and the colours. It has been made using bicycle paint which is characteristic of the Tingatinga style.

Colourful patterns

My birthday was yesterday, I have turned twenty-two.
I threw a get-together at my place and a lot of lovely smiles came around.
We had pumpkin soup, breaded cheese, sweets, olives, Cypriot food, cupcakes and cake.
I gathered colourful patterns from the internet and printed them onto paper, and we made beautiful origami pieces. The creation of a horse and a tortoise was on my behalf:

I took these photographs with a Canon EOS 1000D that I have borrowed from the university. I have fallen in love with the machine.

Time seems to go faster the older you get, but I read that when one travels time is perceived at a slower pace, and a week could feel like three. So I am off to Helsinki tomorrow, I want to get lost in time.

Colour chart

I have made a colour chart based on the common leaves found in London. I was going to put the squares in a symmetrical order, but I like how their random placement allude to the unplanned falling of leaves:

I collected leaves from Regent's Park, Hyde Park and from vegetation on the streets, then I put them in a flower press for a week.

Leaves in autumn

I have been busy working on my new self-defined project.
I am looking at leaves, exploring their shapes, negative space, patterns and colours. It is the perfect season to do a project like this, leaves are getting yellow, red and brown and the colour pallete is impressive!
I went to Kew Gardens yesterday and it was fantastic, they have enormous greenhouses, exotic trees, a bamboo garden and all the plant species you can ever imagine!

I also visited the Barry Flanagan exhibition at the Tate Britain and this one sculpture caught my eye:

Their shape is reminiscent of trees, all they are missing is leaves!

Postmodernism exhibition

I went to see the 'Postmodernism, style and subversion 1970-1990' exhibition at the Vitoria and Albert Museum recently. It was really interesting and ranged from art, design and architecture to fashion, film and music. Here is a sketchbook page with annotations:

I found the architecture the most fascinating. How they turned from the modernist utopian constructions into what was literally a dystopian approach, resulting in architecture that looked unfinished, crooked, wrong. Some of the plans for these buildings were fascinating, especially one plan that was never constructed but which had in mind to locate houses onto concrete shelves, with an enormous lamp that imitates the sun.

This made me think about an extract of Robert Hughe's brilliant documentary The Shock of the New, in which he talks about the utopian modernist architecture of Brasilia. You can somehow see why the modernist mindset changed by the 70s with a failure like this one. I have read though that Brasilia has changed since this documentary (beginning of the 80s) and is full of life nowadays. Indulge here:

I have returned from Copenhagen after seeing a lot of nice exhibitions. I saw one of Georg Baselitz, the German artist, and some group exhibits of French artists. Some really nice Matisse paintings sparked my interest, would love to have one! Here are some sketches:

But now I am leaving for a month, taking trains through Eastern Europe - I am embarking upon an interrail trip! We are starting in Krakow and making our way to Istanbul.

So for now no new art is being produced but I will do sketches along the way! And Mark Twain is packed to keep me company!

Margate Photo Festival

I am delighted to announce that part of the Broad Vision exhibit will be exhibiting at the Margate Photo Festival in Margate, Kent, which runs from the 13th to the 14th of August. Margate is a town in the South-East of England, located in the county of Kent.

Although MargatePhotoFest is a photography festival, my piece in the Broad Vision exhibit uses photography as its core reference.

This is my first entry to Illustration Friday, a place where artists create illustrations based on a selected theme. The theme is established on each friday and then you have the whole week to come up with an illustration.

This week it is 'stay' and I drew a caterpillar talking to a butterfly. Is it a caterpillar asking a butterfly not to fly away, or is it the butterfly itself being reminded by its younger self not to forget childhood and its former self?

I have been away for a week, went to Roskilde Festival and had a great time! Before that, I went to a town in southern Sweden called Ystad and I stumbled upon a couple of urban art pieces that I thought I'd share with you!

Newspaper cover

I did a project about issues that never seem to end, things that are timeless and don't change. I went to the Guildhall library in central London to look at microfilms of old newspapers. Specifically at newspapers from 1989 - my year of birth. I looked through a lot of dates and found stories that seemed relevant to today and to news today. I found articles that, although they were 22 years old, could have been found in any daily newspaper now. I illustrated these stories and created a front page based on The Guardian's layout. All stories on this cover are from 1989 but could very well have been contemporary in the UK.
Here is what it ended up looking like:

I have erased the crucial information which put the stories in their 1989 contexts - such as names of journalists, dates, political figures etc. With this form of erasure I am giving the stories a timeless context.

Broad Vision exhibition finished collage!

The Broad Vision exhibition went well! We had a symposium before the show and there was talks, presentations and discussions. Amongst the guests a person had come all the way from Bristol to see us talk, and a lecturer from the University of Kingston was there as well, pretty exiting stuff!

Here are some photos of my work in the exhibition:

My idea was to use a photograph of a forest as my foundation. I have identified the different natural elements within the image (birch tree, ash tree, holly, etc.) and then found its equivalent as microscopy slides and/or microscopic photographs. Hence I have recreated the scenery in a way which shows how it would look like if we could see the world with a microscope for eyes. I found it interesting to see how there is still a 'green' element to the picture, but bark for an instance, was not brown under the microscope.

Here is my work statement:

"Have you ever wondered what the world would look like if we had microscopes for eyes? I hadn’t until forming part of the Broad Vision project. Looking at microscope slides of ordinary things I discovered some of the most beautiful and detailed images I have ever seen. Brilliant blues in a fragment of moss, light brown seed-looking particles in pollen, electric yellows and oranges in a bee’s head.

I gave in to my curiosity and took a train to London’s closest forest – Epping Forest – armed with a camera and some picnic friends. The photographs taken there would form the basis of my project. I wondered how a mono-coloured landscape such as a forest – made up of mostly green and brown – would look like as a microscopic world. Using found images of slides containing the different plants identified in my photograph as reference, I drew and recreated the scene using my drawings to make a collage.

The result is an artistic response to something that is normally considered ‘science field’ (working with microscopes) and perhaps a break from our serious lives to imagine something, which could never be physically possibly, but nevertheless still fun and stimulating"

On the close-ups of the piece you can see the detail of the collage. It is an A1 collage and it has been made using printouts of my original drawings and then glued on using pritt stick.

It is exciting because it has been confirmed that they are to include our exhibition in a photography festival in the east of England! (more than half of the work in the exhibition is photography or video) When I know more I will put it up!

I have been taking part in a project called Broad Vision, which is about exploring how we look at, see and interpret microscopic worlds. Six disciplines are involved in it (Photographic Arts, Imaging Science, Illustration, Life Science, Psychology, and Computer Science) and we have an exhibition soon.

We had a 'work in progress' exhibition that finished today at the London Gallery West gallery which is situated within our campus. Here is the work I put up for display:

I am working on a piece which is to feature at an exhibition in Shoreditch, London next week. The show is called 'Cuts' and it has focus on the recent government budget plan. If anyone is around feel free to come and take a look at it, we have a blog for it at http://cuts-exhibition.blogspot.com.

Here's a polaroid picture I took in Budapest recently - it was so cold that the camera could only manage to capture the foreground, the whole view included a river and a bridge! I took three other photos that came out completely white due to the low tempearutes unfortunately.

Brainstorming!

I haven't posted lately, I am caught up in a lot of projects but I am on the 'planning' part and not on the 'doing' part yet. I am preparing two pieces for an exhibition we are setting up here in London which will concern the government cuts happening in the country. At the same time I am planning a short animation for a Fairtrade campaign, as well as ideas for a branding design. Hope it all goes well!!

Yesterday Tom Gauld gave us a lecture about himself and the art industry. It was very interesting as I have seen his work on book covers and in the newspaper 'The Guardian'. It was an interesting talk which touched upon how he started getting work after university and about how he got turned down by dozens of places within his first months of trying to get work. He said he financed his 'job-hunting' by borrowing money from his parents and that he would ask people that didn't offer him a job for their contacts - a good trick to get your work around. He said that one of the big jobs he has - a comic strip for the Guardian every week (he has worked for them for 5 years now) he got it by filling in for another artist during summer vacations and by making a better effort he end ended up getting the job permanently and the other artist got fired!
I like the advice he gave us- to make work as good as possible and to make work which you really want to do. Something useful he said as well was to keep a work schedule to make sure that things get done - like waking up at a certain time and do work to a certain hour. I should probably do something like that, it would come in useful in the long run!

For a short project I had to illustrate the quote 'Wrong is right' and I decided to focus on food consumption in different cultures. Dishes we would consider 'wrong' are considered 'right' in other places. For an instance eating dogs in Korea, monkeys in The Democratic Republic of Congo, and guinea pigs in Peru.

I quite like them by themselves but as I had to produce one illustration i thought it would be better to include them all.

I yet have to make the last corrections on my Mexican Drug War project and I am working on architecture as drawings in my drawing module.

Final designs for my set of postcards. I am in the process of making a book out of them with the viewpoints of people living in the affected areas but more detail will come soon.

I found a quote about the Mexican drug war in the Guardian and I quite liked it, thought i'd share:

'this valley of a dozen villages and towns, once home to 20,000 people, has detached from Mexico and entered a realm beyond any map'

What is this place beyond maps? It makes me think of the dreamworld where the sandman has his kingdom or perhaps floating villages on the sea with nothing but the stars to look at.

I have started a new project. I am looking into the Mexican drug war and focusing on the part that the U.S. plays in the conflict and how it is affecting Mexico. I am making a book of postcards. It will not be finished for a month but I will post up things as I get them done, doing research at the moment.

I did a drawing for my drawing class but it is too big to scan and I have no camera! I have done some small sketches of people that I have met that I can share though:

So I have started my course at University of Westminseter! It is very exciting, classes don't start properly until next week but I am looking forward to it all! We have a day dedicated to theory in an auditorium which I think is important as I think that practise is better when you intertwine it with theory, and we get to pick our own electives each semester on top of normal studio practise. I have picked drawing for the first semester.
Tomorrow morning I will be going to the London Art Book Fair, hopefully it will be good and I will get some inspiration!

Here are som sketches of my friends hammock that I slept in for three weeks over the summer as I had nowhere to live for a while!

I have been trapped between finding work and now working a lot. I have done some painting but I don't have a camera to share them! I am extremely happy as the Danish National Museum is showing an exhibition with the most recent series of Bob Dylan paintings. It is called 'The Brazil Series' and it starts in a week!!!!!!!!!! I am ever so excited, oh so so so excited. Here's one of his paintings:

So my final project is done! And it is hanging on the wall as well!

It has taken me a long timo to complete and I am happy with how it turned out!

We are having an exhibition of my whole class in about two weeks and all the pieces are ready. I leave this course with an FdA in Illustration and I have been accepted onto the BA (Hons) Illustration course at the University of Westminster in London and will continue my studies there for the next two years! So there is much more to come!

Now I am going back to Denmark to spend my summer!

working on final piece

I have been gone for a while preparing for my final show! It is done and is flattening out to hang up on the exhibition area tomorrow! But till then here are some pencil drawings of the beginning of it and then later when I drew it in pen and added watercolours. It is lacking the greenery and looks a bit plain without it, but I will put up photos of the finished piece soon.

I have finished all of the line drawing finally! Now I need to do it in watercolours and then with ink and felt tip - I have been working about 6 hours daily or more and I am so glad that it is finally getting there! Will put some photos up soon!

vegetation attack major project

I am trying to decide how to do the colours of the architecture in my drawing. I have done several experiments and I am considering the outcomes. I would like some opinions please! They are all coloured in with watercolours and the vegetation is with green ink. The sky is going to be colourless and the whole drawing will be a 4-5 meters long piece of paper full of buildings from the seafront put together as a panorama.
I am going to put felt tip on top of the ink with details of leafs but in order to save time I didn't do it yet on these practice drawings.

After experimenting with different mediums and scale I have found the way in which I am completing my project. I am using pen to draw the buildings and pale watercolour to fill in. For the vegetation I am using green ink for an under-filling and green felt tip for the detail.

I have acquired a large roll of thick watercolour paper, about 5 meters, for my drawing. I don't think it will be that long but it is better to have too much paper than too little!

I have been taking photos of the seafront and I made a panorama of the pictures to have an overview of the different areas and the different architecture and how they all link together. In this way I have chosen a part to illustrate and now I just need to start making it.

These next two weeks will be really busy! And although the sun is nice and warm I wish it would go away so that I don't get tempted to escape to the beach with the dog and the boyfriend.

Surreal disasters in the south east coast

For my final major project I am looking into how small incidents one place could become disasters elsewhere. I am focusing on the town of Hastings and its architecture for the task. I have taken an incident that happened recently in Nepal about a plant overtaking big areas in a National Park. I am imagining how this town would look like if it became overtaken by plants. For this I am reading some books that deal with the theme of surreal nature, especially 'the day of the triffids' and 'the unlimited dream company'. I am liking the latter best.

Andrew Mockett's workshop

I went to a workshop where artist and woodcutter Andrew Mockett taught us about woodcuts and woodcutting. I have worked with linoleum and lino cutting before, but never woodcut.

I have been visiting Finland, first its capital Helsinki and now Tampere, a city 2 hours away. I went to see an exhibition of the work of M. C. Escher - the first one in Finland!
Some of his work is amazing. His woodcuts are utterly detailed and surreal. His litographs are great too, but somehow I think that they lack the intensitivy of colour that his woodcuts pocess. Even the black and white woodcuts are strong in colour, such as the image of the cathedral in the river above.
This image to the right is one of his litographs. Notice that the stairs at the top of the building go up and up forever or down and down forever and the soldiers never cease to either go up or down. Its amazing!
I personally like the several meters long scroll he made which is a constant metamorphosis. A detail of it can be seen on the third picture above.

I saw passport photographs of several people at an exhibition and I did some sketches.
it is interesting to see the same person from different angles.
It makes me think at how passport photos have changed over time. About six years ago my photo had to be slightly turned and one of my ears had to be visible. Now it was a full front face and black and white. My dad however got a passport done very recently and it was in colour.

I found a small painting I did some years ago and that I didn't like. I took a photo of it and painted over the image to use the canvas again. Now I kind of miss it. It's not good, but in the end it is part of my learning so why shouldn't it be kept?

For my surprise project I was looking at a poem by William Blake, and I find that I quite like it. I leave it for you to appreciate:

So this is my third attempt with oil pastels. It seems like the way of oil pastels is that you use white spirit to kind of 'paint' the pastels - yet its not paint. At the same time, the blocks of pastel are too big to create detail or for the color to keep within the spaces and the contours. Maybe I should bury this technique a bit more in the sand until I venture off, next time more sucessful I hope.

On another note, temperatures where -10 'C this morning and the doors of our car had a hard time opening considering that they are near frozen. Only the car to the driver's seat can open. You can imagine me squeezing myself between the steering wheel to get to the seat sat next to it. I laughed. Just a bit.

I did these Lino prints for a project which is about creating some sort of narrative containing one or more elements of surprise. I've colored the backgrounds in with green acrylic paint but I'm still going to try and do other versions where colors are different and the figures are in color or so. I'm not sure how this works but I quite like the contrast of green and white.

Winter has finally arrived here and yesterday we had -8 degrees and lots of snow!
I better go paint something now.

So I'm back in England again! I had been looking forward to starting my second year of Illustration, and well, here I am! We are getting introduced into our mayor project for the semester which is based around creating a product - which in my case most probably will end up being a book - and to start off, we made badges. As I might have mentioned, I work in a comic book shop here in Copenhagen at the moment. Today something interesting happened - we had a visit from the Italian artist Milo Manara who is well-known for his erotic artwork. I got to meet him and he made me a drawing - something to brighten up my never-ending day!
